The #1 Best Wellness Tool for Whole Health

Updated: Sep 9

Summary

We love discussing self-care and holistic wellness on this blog, but what's the most effective and personalized source of care available? It's actually pretty straightforward.

You.

The answer is you—you, and your effort.

You Are Your Best Advocate

The most potent holistic medicine is how you care for yourself, mind and body, when no one else can.

That care process includes a whole host of things, ranging from the everyday (like brushing teeth, making quiet time, eating well, and socializing) to the scheduled (like regular doctor visits). All of these have an impact on your health, but it's up to you to make them happen.

Kammi, the founder of Whole-Self Wellness, explores this concept in a recent video.

"You are the only one that's there at every single appointment, with your therapist, your doctor, your specialists..." -Kammi

Your doctors can diagnose issues, prescribe medications, and give care instructions, but it's up to you to follow through on what you discuss with them and incorporate preventive care.

You possess a distinctly unique and detailed outlook on your life that others lack. You know how much you eat, when your bedtime is, what allergies you have, which exercise is your favorite, and when you're at your most tired. Of course, you can share this with your doctor, but you're the one living it.

Solving Problems vs. Pursuing Health

To help visualize this, hypothetically, maybe you know certain foods give you acid reflux. You're also having a lot of headaches. If you report to your doctor with a complaint of headaches, but exclude this little dietary detail, they may not see the connection. Their recommendation could range anywhere from OTC painkillers to a CT scan. However, if the source of your headaches is acid reflux, neither of those will address it, most likely. These measures are useful in ruling out other issues, but the original complaint still stands.

Fast-forwarding through the diagnostic process----let's say both of you make the connection that acid reflux is causing your headaches. At this stage, your doctor might recommend a prescription or OTC medication for acid reflux. Your appointment ends, and...

...the rest is open-ended. It's now up to you to procure your medicine from the pharmacy or OTC, bring it home, and take it as directed. Ideally, proper administration will soothe your acid reflux, and by extension, your headaches.

We strongly recommend you follow medical advice and take medications as directed by your professionals. However, doesn't it make you think: if my headaches are a result of acid reflux, and my acid reflux is a result of eating certain foods... what if I just stopped eating those foods? Would my acid reflux go away without further intervention?

This shift is critical because you're no longer thinking in terms of solving problems; you're thinking of preventative care and pursuing health.

You're taking charge of your own life.

And that's powerful.

Application

Imagine thinking like this in all aspects of your health.

  • "I'm going to meditate at 9 pm tonight to avoid screen time before bed."

  • "I'm going to devote time to meal-prepping so I can have quick, easy, healthy meals on the go during the rest of my week."

  • "I'm completely exhausted. I'm not done with my chores yet, but I'm going to let myself rest now, so I can be present for more important things later."

  • "I'm going to call and make that appointment now so I don't forget."

  • "I'm going to thoughtfully enjoy one donut so I don't feel like I'm missing out and overeat later."

This is what real holistic wellness looks like.

No one can do it for you, but you can find support. Surround yourself with like-minded friends and professionals who value health and wellness. Focus on positive outcomes and build up routines that work with, not against, the healthy habits you desire.
